Satellite internet can be a real boon to those who need a faster connection and make frequent use of the internet, but it is by no means an ideal solution. Before you sign up for a service, consider the following facts.

Like dish TV, satellite internet is dependant on the weather for the quality of service. Poor conditions out can jeopardize your ability to communicate with the satellite. If you have a business that is dependant on your connectivity, this could pose problems for you. Satellite internet is also not as fast as DSL or cable internet. Although it is considerably faster than dial-up, you still may not be able to play games or watch live streaming video effectively.

Most of all, satellite internet service tends to be expensive. Some companies charge up to $600 for equipment and installation. Others offer deals or discounts; look for companies that will give you a free dish, or at least a free trial period before you sign up. Average installation costs run around $300. On a monthly basis, how much you pay for service will depend in part on how fast you need your internet to run. Lower end costs are about $50 a month, but if you want to be able to watch live feeds or play fast-paced games, you will need the premium service, which runs more in the region of $150.

On the up side, satellite internet provides you with something you can not otherwise get. If you really love being online, or if you need the access for business purposes, dial-up is probably not going to cut it for you.
